DAYTON, Ohio - Junior Brandon Cramer from football and senior Ellie Malchow from softball earned the first annual Presidential Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award from the Office of Academic Services of Student-Athletes and the Office of the Provost. Malchow, a secondary education and mathematics major from Kettering, Ohio, participated at the USA Athletes International Tournament in Oldenzaal, Holland. Last year on the diamond, Malchow played 39 games and started 35 of them. Of her 17 hits, seven were doubles, one triple, and eight RBI for the season. Defensively, Malchow showcased a .957 fielding percentage at second base. Cramer, a native of Toledo, Ohio, was named to the First Team, 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team. The junior defensive back was the only Pioneer Football League student-athlete to be named First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America this year. He has a 4.0 cumulative grade point average majoring in Pre-Med. On the field, Cramer started the remaining nine games for the Flyers this season. He was third on the team in tackles for the second straight season with 52. He led UD interceptions (3, tied) and fumbles recovered (1, tied) and was second on the team in passes broken up (3). The Presidential Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award is designed to be the most prestigious honor presented by the Office of Academic Services for Student-Athletes and the Office of the Provost. It serves to recognize two student-athletes, one male and one female, who have demonstrated academic excellence, qualities of leadership and service to the University of Dayton community. The Office of Academic Services for Student-Athletes also honored the members of the 4.00 Flyers Award, All-Academic Team and 3.50 honorees. All-Academic Team - Recognizes student-athletes who earned the highest cumulative grade point average on their respective teams.
