DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton softball team split with the IPFW Mastodons on Tuesday at UD Softball Stadium. The Flyers took game one in thrilling fashion knocking of the Mastodons 6-5 in eight innings.

Senior pitcher Erin Lafayette picked up the win in the outing, striking out two batters and walking two. Rachel Staschuk was saddled with her fifth loss of the season striking out two Flyers.

Mollie Schrank continued her offensive attack with two hits in three at-bats and one run batted in.

Emily Stegeman also got in on the action going 2-for-3 and scoring a run in the contest.

IPFW struck first hitting a solo shot over the centerfield wall to make it 1-0 early in the game. The Mastodons struck again in the third inning adding three more runs to give them a 4-0 advantage.

With their backs against the wall, the Flyers pieced together a two run fifth inning when Schrank reached first on a throwing error by the third baseman. They scored once more moments later when Schrank crossed the plate to cut into IPFW's lead 4-2.

The Mastodons added one more on a homer by Mickelson, but the Dayton bats were about to fire up once more.

Dayton drove in three runs in the bottom of the sixth to knot the game all up.

Anne Maci then stepped in during the eighth frame and hit a walk off double to end the game in favor of UD.

In their second game, the Flyers got up to an early 1-0 lead over the Mastodons. IPFW, however, captured the lead in the third inning and held onto it for the rest of the game.

Dayton was poised to tie make an upset with runners at the corner and power hitter Blair Crabtree at the plate, but the Mastodons pitcher Amanda Olender forced a ground out to end the game.

The Flyers are back in conference action on Friday against the Temple Owls at UD Softball Stadium. Opening pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET. For more information visit www.DaytonFlyers.com.
