March 19, 2008 ORLANDO, Fla. - An old trend and a new one continued to gain steam as the Dayton Flyers continued to find success in the Sunshine State. UD's strong hitting continued, but was backed up a nearly flawless defensive effort as the Flyers won 7-0 over the Columbia Lions. Dayton improved to 10-8 overall, won its fifth in a row and been victorious in nine out of its last 10 contests. Freshman Emily Stegeman led the UD offense going 2-for-2 with two runs batted in and a run scored as the Flyers cranked out eight hits with half of them for extra bases. On the mound, sophomore Eva Rappe continues to find her groove. She threw six shutout innings allowing only two hits to the Lions. Rappe in her last four appearances in 4-0 with a 0.33 earned run average. Dayton took an early 1-0 lead in the first after junior Mollie Schrank singled, stole second and came home on an RBI double by senior Blair Crabtree. The Flyers added another run in the second when senior Laura Matthews singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice and scored on a Stegeman single to right. After holding the Lion offense for four innings, Dayton erupted with a five-run fourth thanks in part to another RBI single by Stegeman and a two-run triple from sophomore Molly Meyer. That proved to be enough for UD's defense which played error free for the second straight game. In her last five games Stegeman has also found her groove batting .333 with three RBI and two runs scored. UD wraps up the Rebel Games series later in the day as the Flyers take on the Colgate Red Raiders. |
