KETTERING, Ohio - After rededicating herself to her golf game over the summer and working on becoming a more patient player, sophomore Katie Gallagher finally saw the results she was looking for all fall season. With a second round score of 78, Gallagher was the individual medalist at the 2007 UD Invitational. Gallagher tallied a score of 73 in round one to finish with a 151 overall. "I just took it hole by hole this tournament," Gallagher said. "I didn't let myself get down after taking bad shots and that really helped me." Dayton enjoyed one of its best fall seasons in recent memory. The Flyers finished in second as a team three times during the fall, had two medalists in freshman Julie Pouliquen and Gallagher and believe the pieces are in place to continue its improvement. "We have a very young team and we have a very deep team with various sophomores and freshmen," said head coach Sally Kosters. "They are all fighting for first, second, third position on the team. This is an example of how deep we are. We just have a young talented team with a lot of chemistry to it. I think the chemistry made a big difference." Not far behind in third overall was Pouliquen. She carded rounds of 77 and 79 to finish with a 156. Pouliquen medaled earlier this season at the Youngstown State Invitational. The best score of the day for UD came from senior Mary Kane who tallied a career best 73. Kane rallied from an 86 in round one to finish with an overall score of 159 to tie for fourth overall. "Today I was surprised by the 73 from Mary Kane," Kosters said. "That was her career low and that was a big surprise. Other than that everyone is playing just as I think they would expect to play. I've seen them play like this in practice so the rounds today are not unusual." Coming in fourth on the team and tied for seventh overall was sophomore Katie Dempsey. Dempsey bounced back from an 82 on day one to pick up a 78 in round two. Another Flyer who improved from round one was sophomore Casey Peterson who finished tied for 14th overall. Peterson shot an 85 in round one and came back with a 78 in the second. Sophomore Cari DeAngelis followed a similar pattern after shooting an 85 in Monday's round to come back with a 79 in round two. Freshman Ellen Ciacchini recorded an 80 in round two to finish with a 169 overall and tied for 28th overall. Rounding out the Flyers were sophomore Paige Smith with scores of 84 and 88, sophomore Elaine English with scores of 87 and 88, freshman Megan Keating with rounds of 86 and 89 and freshman Heather Grant with rounds of 83 and 88. The Dayton A team finished in second with a total score of 638, while the Dayton B team came in tied for fifth tallying a 655. Oakland University won the Invitational by one stroke with a 637. |
