Robert English was named volunteer assistant coach for UD men's cross country team in June of 2007. An avid runner since 1996, English has been coached by Olympic gold medalist Bob Schul and has trained with the Schul Racing team. His training helped him record a career-best and impressive marathon time of 2:52.35 in 2003. English continued his involvement with the Bob Schul Racing Team serving as president from 2003-'06. He currently serves as an advisor and coach for the 5 Rivers Metro Running Club where his responsibilities include working with adult recreational runners; in addition to organizing training times and venues in the Springfield area. English graduated from Sinclair Community College in 1988 where he studied Mechanical Drawing. He currently works at Machine X of Dayton, Inc., where he's in his 18th year as a shop foreman. He recently decided to continue his formal education at Clark State in the physical therapy program. He was born in Tokyo, Japan and attended high school in Germany. A natural competitor, while in high school English participated in such sports as baseball, football, and wrestling. It wasn't until after his days of competitive club rugby that he became a serious runner. "Rob continues Flyer cross country's tradition of having assistant coaches who understand the demands that are placed upon Division I distance runners," said UD head coach Rich Davis. "With a well rounded athletic background, combined with his expertise in relating conditioning and physical therapy to sport, Rob's coaching will help our athletes develop as we strive towards higher levels of competitiveness." English currently resides in Springfield, Ohio. |
