PHILADELPHIA - A pair of University of Dayton freshmen were honored by the Atlantic 10 Conference on Monday. Relief pitcher Burny Mitchem was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week in baseball while Zach Glassman earned Top Performer and Rookie honors for men's golf. Mitchem picked up a win and a save in 4.1 innings of scoreless relief over two appearances last week. He notched his third save of the season on Wednesday by forcing Butler into two double plays and striking out the final batter of the game in a 6-2 victory. The 6-6, 260-pound closer then struck out four and made Richmond hit into another double play in 2.2 innings pitched to earn a win as the Flyers edged the Spiders, 9-7 on Saturday. Overall this season, Mitchem is 4-2 with three saves and a 1.82 ERA. The Farmington, MI native has struck out 39 batters in 29.2 innings pitched. The Flyer baseball team will make the short trip from Dayton to Fairborn for a non-conference meeting with Wright State on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. ET. Following Wednesday's contest, the Flyers will head to the "Bay State" for a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series against Massachusetts. All four games this week can be followed with Gametracker at www.DaytonFlyers.com. Glassman tied for 20th overall at the First Energy Intercollegiate hosted by Kent State this past weekend. He extended his streak to 12 consecutive rounds below 80 and is now tied for the team lead with a 75.0 stroke average heading into this weekend's Atlantic 10 Conference Championship. The native of Highland Heights, Ohio has competed in all 24 rounds during the 2007-2008 season for the Flyers. Dayton's men's golf team will be one of 12 teams competing for an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship in Winter Garden, FL this weekend. UD is scheduled to 18 holes each on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Orange County Golf Course. |
