DeLand, Ala. - In the first match of the spring season for UD men's golf, the Dayton Flyers had a good start thanks in part to a strong freshman class.

Freshman Chris Woeste fired a 73 in the 18-hole tournament match at the Victoria Hills Golf Course in DeLand, Ala. Woeste's 73 led UD with a total of 287, one stroke under par.

But he wasn't the only first-year golfer to start off well. Freshman Zach Glassman was one stroke back with a 74, while freshman Ian Gilley picked up a 76.

Junior Rob Chappell added a 77 along with freshman Jeff Hodapp to round out the Top Five for the Flyers.

"Overall it has been a great week," head coach Drew Tyrer said. "We improved every day we were down here and that's what we want to do. We still have a lot of work left, especially on our short game and our putting."

Among the individuals, junior Matthew Friend picked up a 78 and junior Mitch Custenborder added an 81. Junior Mark Juve fired an 86 and junior Nick Trubee picked up an 89.

UD continues the spring season at the Hoosier Invitational from March 29-30 at the Indiana University Golf Course.
