DAYTON, Ohio - Dayton got out to an early two-run lead but could not hold on in a 4-2 loss to visiting Xavier on Sunday in an Atlantic 10 baseball contest at Time Warner Cable Stadium. The Flyers and Musketeers will wrap up their three-game set on Monday at 1 p.m. ET in a game that can be followed with FREE Live Audio and Gametracker at www.DaytonFlyers.com. UD jumped out to a 2-0 lead with runs in the second and fourth innings, but were held to just two base hits the rest of the way and three overall on the day. Jacob Speath, Ryan Nevill and Cole Tyrell each singled for the Flyers, which left 10 runners on base throughout the afternoon. Max Navalinski scored both Dayton runs after reaching on an error in the second inning and walking in the fourth. He is now second on the team this season with 13 runs scored. Junior lefty Quinn Haselhorst had a great start on the mound for UD as he allowed just two runs on four hits over 5.1 innings pitched. Senior Lucas Farden saw action for the second consecutive day and struck out five in 3.2 innings pitched while surrendering two runs on three hits and three walks. The Flyers started the scoring in the second inning when Max Navalinski reached on a fielding error by the Xavier second baseman. He then stole second and was in scoring position with two outs when Scott Dunwoody hit a fly ball to right field. The Musketeer fielder retreated and was underneath the play but dropped the ball over his shoulder for an error and Navalinski scored from second base for a 1-0 lead. Jake Hoover and Max Navalinski walked to begin the fourth inning for Dayton. Ryan Nevill followed with a bunt single down the left field line to load the bases. After a ground out retired one Flyer runner, Cole Tyrell sent Navalinski home from third with a RBI groundout to the shortstop. However, UD would get no more runs out of the rally and was held to a 2-0 lead. Versailles, Ohio native Zac Richard evened the game in the sixth inning with a one-out two-run homer to right field for Xavier. The Musketeers came back to take advantage of two walks and a hit by pitch in the seventh inning to set up a two-out RBI single up the middle by Richard to give Xavier a 4-2 victory. |
