DAYTON, Ohio - Dayton rallied late to tie the game only to drop the finale of a doubleheader Sunday against Valparaiso, 4-3 in eight innings. With the loss, UD is 9-4 on the season entering midweek series at Tennessee Tech on Tuesday and Wednesday. After falling behind 3-0 after four innings of play, the Flyers rallied for a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to knot the score before falling on extra inning. Senior Kevin Miller provided the big hit for Dayton in the sixth inning with a pinch hit, two RBI double with two outs that evened the score at 3-3. UD was hit by pitch five times in the game and has now been plunked 37 times in only 13 games (2.84 HBP per game). Last season, Dayton led the Atlantic 10 Conference and ranked second in the nation with 104 times hit by pitch. Both pitching staffs were in control throughout the game as each side was limited to just four hits each. Freshman Tim Corbey made his collegiate debut and gave up one run on two hits while striking out one batter in 2.1 innings pitched. Senior Lucas Farden came out of the bullpen to fan one while giving up two runners, just one earned, on one hit over 2.2 innings pitched. Freshman Burny Mitchem suffered his first loss of the season after surrendering only one unearned run on one hit in the eighth inning. He struck out three while walking only one in 3.0 innings pitched. |
