UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON ARENA Map Directions
The Home of Dayton Basketball The crown jewel of UD's superb athletic facilities, the UD Arena is regarded as one of the nation's best college venues. A $13.1 million renovation was completed in 2002 which updated the arena's concourses, facades, concessions and restrooms and added valuable premium seating, clubs and retail space. Both the new Time Warner Cable Flight Deck and a renovated Boesch Lounge, along with the accompanying loge seats and suites at each end, offer a perspective on the game unlike any other. A regular stop for the NCAA Tournament, UD Arena has hosted 65 NCAA postseason games since opening in 1969 -- the third-most among active venues and fourth-most all-time. UD will host the 2006 NCAA Men's Basketball First and Second
WELCOME STADIUM
The Home of Dayton Football University of Dayton football team has called Welcome Stadium home for 29 seasons. The 1991 Sports Illustrated college football issue noted that the name Welcome on a stadium does not describe how difficult visiting teams have found it to win against the Flyers, and it still remains true today. The word implies hospitality, but Dayton has been anything but hospitable to its opponents at home. Entering the 2005 season, UD is 175-34-1 (.836) at home. Welcome Stadium currently features an Astroturf playing surface, full-density urethane 400-meter running track with a steeplechase pit, and a FairPlay scoreboard with video reply capability. The stadium has a seating capacity of 11,000. Also in the stadium are locker facilities, a two-level indoor press box, an outer press area, and concession stands under both sets of grandstands. Welcome Stadium is located next to the University of Dayton Arena just over one mile from UD's campus. Combined with Time Warner Cable Baseball Stadium and the UD Softball Stadium, the four sites make a sports complex that serves as a southern gateway to UD's campus and the city of Dayton.
THOMAS J. FRERICKS ATHLETICS AND CONVOCATION CENTER
The Thomas J. Frericks Athletic and Convocation Center is home to the Flyer volleyball team. The Frericks Center is the third-largest volleyball-only facility in college volleyball. Its 5,000 seat capacity is only behind Arkansas' Barnhill Arena (9,000) and Murray State's Cutchin Fieldhouse (5,500). The venue served as host of the 1997, 2000 and 2001 Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championships. UD plays and practices on a Sport Court volleyball floor. UD's red and blue floor that is marked just for volleyball competition is the same surface used by the U.S. National team. Many of the nation's top 20 college volleyball programs play on Sport Court floors, and it is the official court of the men's and women's NCAA championships, and the USA Volleyball nationals. Following a recent renovation, the Frericks Center unveiled a volleyball-specific scoreboard, new fan seating and an environmental graphics package including championship banners.
Since becoming the exclusive home to UD soccer, Baujan Field has grown into one of the top soccer venues in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The facility boasts a well-maintained natural grass surface with an irrigartion system as well as a lighting system, allowing for night games. A new scoreboard on the east end and a pair of bleacher seating sections on the south side were new additions to the field in 1999. On the north side of the field, a brick-faced terraced seating section was bulit into the hillside. The project, totaling more than $500,000 and fully funded with private donations, helped increase the seating capacity to 2,000. Baujan Field has played host to a number of post-season soccer events. The Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship was hosted here in 1998 and again in 2002, with the Men's Championship being played in 1996 and 1999. A first-round match of the 1999 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship called Baujan Field home as the Flyers advanced with a 3-2 win over Evansville. The men have twice played NCAA Play-In games at the historic venue -- 1997 and 1998.
Time Warner Cable Stadium, UD baseball's new $4 million facility, was dedicated on May 5, 2005. It features a press box, covered chair back seating behind home plate, concessions and restrooms. The team will also benefit from an indoor hitting/pitching cage with team rooms located along the right field line that can be used throughout the year. "It is very humbling for our baseball team to have one of the best facilities in the Midwest as well as the best facility in the Atlantic 10," said Head Coach Tony Vittorio. "The great thing about it is that our players were able to see it go up from the ground level. You could see in their eyes the amount of pride that they have in the facility."
UD Softball Stadium in 2005 as part of the Arena Sports Complex on the banks of the Great Miami River. UD softball stadium features dugouts, batting cages, bullpens with multiple pitching rubbers and a state-of-the-art natural grass playing surface. The unique location along the river offers fans scenic views of the river and Carrillon park while enjoying Dayton Flyers softball games. The stadium is located next to the site of the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel being built on I-75.
The renovation of the Athletics Practice Facility provides quality indoor practice space for basketball, football, track & field, tennis, soccer, baseball and softball. It enables the Flyers to simultaneously enhance the student-athlete experience and competitive performance. The refurbished facility, which opened in January 2007, benefits more than 350 Flyer student-athletes. By adding the additional practice space, UD teams gain flexibility to train and practice.
