The University of Dayton appreciates the support of our alumni and fans. We ask, however, that you also help keep Dayton's tradition of athletic integrity intact by following NCAA regulations. Your assistance will ensure that the eligibility of both prospective student-athletes is protected. We hope that this guide continues to help you handle commonly encountered situations. If you have any questions regarding NCAA or Atlantic 10 rules and regulations, please do not hesitate to contact the UD Compliance Office at (937) 229-4861.

Who Are the Flyer Faithful?

The NCAA defines a Representative of Athletics Interest as "an individual, independent agency, corporate entity or other organization who is known (or should be known) by a member of the institution's executive or athletic administration.

  • Have participated in or to be a member of an agency or organization promoting the institution's intercollegiate athletics program.

  • Have made financial contributions to the athletics department or to an athletics booster organization of that institution.

  • Be assisting or to have been requested by the athletics department staff to assist in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes.

  • Be assisting or to have assisted in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their families or having been involved otherwise in promoting the institution's athletics program.

Please note: Once you have been identified as a Representative of Athletics Interest, you will retain that identity immediately.

Terms to Know

Prospect - A prospective student-athlete ("prospect") is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade. Additionally, a student who has not started ninth grade becomes a prospect if the institution provides the individual (or relatives or friends) any financial assistance or other benefits that the institution does not provide to prospective students generally.

Extra Benefits - Any special arrangement by institutional employees or representatives of athletics interest to provide a student-athlete (or relatives or friends) a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation.

Examples of Impermissible Benefits:

  • Taking a student-athlete out to dinner at a commercial establishment.

  • Providing transportation

  • Providing any gift of material value such as cash, use of an automobile, co-signing a loan, presents, etc.

  • Not charging for a professional service (haircuts, typing of papers, etc.)

  • Provision of free or reduced items from commercial businesses (drinks, meals, clothing, etc.)

  • Any benefit not regularly available to non-athlete students.

Want to Hire a Flyer? Make Sure You Know the Rules
Prospects may be employed by boosters during the summer prior to their enrollment at Dayton. However, employment may not begin until the prospect has graduated from high school.

Current student-athletes may seek employment and there is no longer a limit on the amount of money they can earn during the academic year. The compliance office keeps records on all employment information. Student-athletes must be compensated only for work actually performed and at a rate commensurate with the going rate for those services. Student-athletes may not be hired based on their athletic abilities.
